Objectives of the Course
The aims of this course is to introduce the student to the early sources of sociological thought, and to depict the generation of sociology as a distinct science within the context of philosophy of society and politics, and its development afterwards.

The students who succeeded in this course:
LO-1 can explain the historical roots of sociological thought. PO-8 Understanding, resolving and – if need be – manipulating singular problems confronted in sub-disciplines of philosophy.
PO-12 Attaining knowledge and using sources in the field of history of science.
Examination
LO-2 can explain the general character of modern social science. PO-8 Understanding, resolving and – if need be – manipulating singular problems confronted in sub-disciplines of philosophy.
PO-13 Identifying inferential structures in given textual materials.

LO-3 can identify the leading schools in classical sociology. PO-1 Developing skills of analytic and synthetic thinking, reading and writing.

Examination
LO-4 can grasp the philosophical foundations of social science. PO-6 Approaching in a philosophical fashion to problems in fields such as science, art and culture, and identifying such problems.
PO-8 Understanding, resolving and – if need be – manipulating singular problems confronted in sub-disciplines of philosophy.
PO-15 Identifying the philosophical-logical facets of problems treated in given scientific texts, and locating within the philosophical literature possible solutions to such problems.

Course Contents
Detection of proto-sociological thought in the history of philosophy; presentation of the forerunners and founders of sociology; presentation of the basic views/currents in sociology; presentation of traditional/classical sociological theories (Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Pareto, Simmel, LePlay, Veblen, Tönnies, Spencer).
