History

Nevsehir Haci Bektaş Veli University Faculty of Education Department of Special Education was opened in 2011 according to the Law no. 2547, in accordance with the Article 7 / d-2 amended by the Law No. 2880.


Qualification Awarded

The program trains teachers to work with individuals with special needs who become more independent, productive and active participants of the society; teachers are trained to understand their profession's value in social development, to achieve ethical standards, to adopt scientific thinking and to use information and communication technologies affectively.


Level of Qualification

Department of Special Education consists of 4 programs; Department of Mental Disabilities Education, Department of Hearing Impaired Education, Department of Visual Disability Education, and Department of Special Abilities Education. The duration of undergraduate education of Special Education Teaching Program is 4 years.


Specific Admission Requirements

The student who want to enroll in this department, have to complete processes which determined by university's academic and judicial statute and have to achieve exams. The student who started his/her education in domestic or abroad, can make application for lateral transfer. Acceptance of students are examine considering each student's conditions and application's degree before season starting and evaluate peculiarly. Further introduction is present about entrance to university in Institute introduction's catalogue.


Specific Arrangement For Recognition of Prior Learning

At Nevsehir Haci Bektas Veli University, full-time students can be exempted from some courses within the framework of the related bylaws. If the content of the course previously taken in another institution is equivalent to the course offered at NEVU, then the student can be exempted from this course with the approval of the related faculty/graduate school after the evaluation of the course content.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations

1-Special education has influenced the development of important people, events and phenomena defined in terms of impact on educational practices. 2-Describes developments in scientific methods and techniques used in special education. 3-Defines the criteria and assessment tools in order to be recognized as special needs students. 4-Special needs of the individual that may affect the implementation of individual assessment and teaching methods will be used to define linguistic and cultural variables. 5-Pursues changes in laws and regulations related to special education and development. 6-Defines the characteristics of normal development and different disabilities. 7-Uses the Turkish National Education and special education purposes and principles of teaching practices and in their assessment. 8-Assess individuals with special needs of motor, emotional, social, cognitive and academic development. 9-Uses taking into account the linguistic and cultural characteristics and needs in assessment tools and teaching methods for individuals with special needs. 10-Evaluates students from different sources (assessment tools, their families, medical professionals, school staff and monitoring, etc.). 11-Organizes instruction using assessment results. 12-Improves teaching and assessment materials for special needs in accordance with the requirements of individual the effectiveness of teaching. 13-Uses effective teaching methods to support individuals with special needs of motor, social, cognitive and academic development. 14-Uses effective teaching methods for individuals with special needs to support their independent living and self-determination skills. 15-Uses effective behavior change and classroom management strategies. 16-Uses effective strategies for supporting alternative communication skills of individuals with special needs. 17-Uses information technology effectively in teaching planning and implementation process. 18-Collaborates with families and other professionals in order to improve the effectiveness of teaching and continuity. 19-Makes family education to ensure continuity of instruction at home. 20-Directs individuals with special needs and their families for accessing to community resources. 21-Uses ways to reach information effectively for personal and professional development. 22-Acts in accordance with professional regulations and the ethical principles. 23-Creates a positive, secure, value differences, egalitarian and supportive learning environment.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of this program are designated in public and private primary and secondary special education schools, rehabilitation centers and counceling and research centers which are affiliated with Ministry of National Education as "special education teacher." Moreover they can work in institutions which are affliated with Turkish Social Service and Children Protection Institution. In addition they can work as academicians in various universities if they complete their postgraduate studies.


Access to Further Studies

Candidates who successfully complete the sans education can study in graduate programs, provided that they get a valid grade from the ALES exam and have sufficient English language knowledge.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Each semester, students are given at least one mid-term examination and a final exam. Apart from examinations, quizzes can be given without announcing a specific date. For each course taken at Ankara University, the student is given one of the letter grades below by the instructor as the semester course grade. The table below provides the detailed information about the local letter grades and coefficients. Score Grades Coefficients 90-100 AA 4,00 85-89 B1 3,50 80-84 B2 3,25 75-79 B3 3,00 70-74 C1 2,75 65-69 C2 2,50 60-64 C3 2,00 50-59 F1 1,50 49 and below F2 0,00 The lowest grade to be successful in a course is (C3) 2,00. The grades lover than 2,00 (F1 and F2) are unsuccessful. In order to be successful in a program, grade point average must be at least (C3) 2.00 and all courses must be completed successfully.


Graduation Requirements

The students studying in this program are required to have a Cumulative Grade Points Average (Cum. GPA) of not less than 2.00/4.00 and have completed all the courses with at least a letter grade of C3/2.00 in the program in order to graduate. The minimum number of ECTS credits required for graduation is 240. It is also mandatory for the students to complete their compulsory internship in a specified duration and quality.


Mode of Study

It is possible to work as a private education teacher in private and public schools affiliated to MEB. In addition, employment opportunities are available in Guidance Research Centers.


Facilities

Special Education Department is an undergraduate program which consists of therotical and practical classes. The main purpose of the program is to educate special educators who will able to work with the children, families, teachers, administrators and community leaders in order to meet the needs of the children with mental retardation and their families. The department carries out educational researches and projects in related with various areas of special education, also develops and implements pilot programs for children, families and teachers.
