Information Of Programmes

FACULTY OF EDUCATION / ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

History

The aim of the department is to train mathematics teachers for the second level (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades) of primary schools. The language of instruction of the Department of Mathematics and Science Education, Department of Mathematics Education, is Turkish and the duration of education is 4 years. There is no secondary education program and preparatory program in the Department of Mathematics Education. The program includes courses in field education, vocational knowledge, and general culture. The courses are given theoretically and practically.


Qualification Awarded

The graduates of the department are entitled to work as mathematics educators at state or private primary education institutions (second level) and at private study centres such as private teaching institution or center for studies. In addition, they can be assigned to academic staff at universities by doing post-graduate studies in their respective fields or side areas. Students who successfully complete the program are entitled to receive a Bachelor's degree in Teaching Training in Primary Mathematics.

Specific Admission Requirements

Having a high school diploma and be eligible to register to our department as a result of examinations made by ÖSYM.


Specific Arrangement For Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning in Turkish higher education institutions are still in progress. Therefore, recognition of prior learning in Nevşehir University has not been fully accomplished. However, exemption exams from such lessons as Computer Sciences and English are held at the beginning of every academic year. Students who consider themselves capable of meeting the learning outcomes of such lessons are welcome to take the exemption test. Those who have passed the exemption test are exempt from the relevant lesson


Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Successfully complete all courses available in the program (a total of 240 ECTS) and to have at least 2.00 on a 4.00 weighted grade point average.


Profile of The Programme

The objectives of the Teacher Training in Mathematics Programme is to train students as mathematics teachers who have humanitarian and moral values, mathematical literacy, the ability of thinking, investigating, examining and using modern education techniques.

PO-3 Explains the concepts and the relations between concepts related to the field at a level that can meet the needs of the students.
PO-4 Has the information about aims, principles, vision, mission, structure and functioning of Turkish education system, classroom management approaches and concepts related to education.
PO-5 Has the knowledge about students’ developmental and learning characteristics and also learning difficulties.
PO-6 Adapts to teaching activities by following developments and innovations in the mathematics curriculum.
PO-7 Uses mathematical language accurately and effectively in their mathematics courses and in planning learning and teaching process.
PO-8 Applies the most appropriate teaching strategies, methods and techniques considering students’ developmental characteristics, individual differences, characteristics and achievements of the subject area.
PO-9 Evaluates students' outcomes in all aspects by using different methods.
PO-10 Has knowledge about the nature and historical development of mathematics.
PO-11 Has the ability to use Turkish language appropriately and effectively in accordance with the rules and to communicate with students effectively.

Access to Further Studies

Upon a successful completion of the program, student may continue with master and doctoral studies, provided that they get a required score in Academic Staff and Graduate Study Education Exam (ALES) and have a sufficient level of English language proficiency.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students are subjected to midterm and final exam for each course.The contribution of the midterm exam is 40% and final exam is 60%. All examinations are evaluated out of 100 points. It is necessary to obtain at least 50 points on the final exam. On one course students who gets one of the letter grades (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB) and (CC) considered as successful. Students who fail will take lessons again.


Graduation Requirements

Successfully complete all courses available in the program (a total of 240 ECTS) and to have at least 2.00 on a 4.00 weighted grade point average.
