Information Of Programmes

FACULTY OF EDUCATION / ELEMENTARY SCIENCE TEACHING

History

Nevsehir Haci Bektas Veli University Faculty of Education Department of Mathematics and Science Education, Division of Science Education Programme, was founded in accordance with the Articles 7/d-2 of the Law No. 2880, as amended by Law No.2547 in 2011. The program started education semester in 2012-2013. Medium of instruction is Turkish.


Qualification Awarded

The Bachelor's Degree in Science Teaching (second cycle in Primary Teaching) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements

In Turkey it is necessary that students to pass the YKS (Higher Education Examination). The only way to enter a program in University is through these tests’ scores. The students make choices in order of preference to be admitted to the programs they want to attend and send their preference form to ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center). Then the students have to provide the necessary documents and register on the mentioned dates. For the foreign students, the criteria of ÖSYM and of the quota that the university determined are taken into consideration.


Specific Arrangement For Recognition of Prior Learning

In Turkish Higher Education Institutions, recognition of the prior learning is at the beginning level. As a consequence, for all programs of Nevşehir Haci Bektas Veli University recognition of prior learning has not been started yet. However, exemption exams for English and Computer courses are held at the beginning of each academic semester. Students, who get the expected learning outcomes, have the chance of attending these exams. The students who pass the exams are exempted from that course.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations

In order to obtain a bachelor's degree in the Division of Science Teacher Education Programme, students must accomplish all compulsory and elective courses, a total of 240 ECTS, and have a weighted grade point average of at least 2.0 out of 4.00.


Profile of The Programme

The primary goal of the department is to train teachers who have a sound understanding of science and have positive attitude to science and the program is committed to promoting scientific literacy. The undergraduate program consists of courses as content education, ptofession knowledge and general culture. The program also aims to train teachers who can teach through innovative methods techniques and approaches. “Learning through action” has a special significance emphasized in all the courses in the program.

PO-5 Applying the appropriate teaching strategies, methods and techniques, taking into account the characteristics of the subject area, developmental properties and learning patterns of students who are at the second grade of elementary education.
PO-6 Recognizing Science Program prepared by Ministry of Education and ability to implement this program.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates of this department appointed by the Ministrey f National Education as an science teacher on condition that obtaining the required score from Public Personnel Selection Examination (KPSS), and teach at universities, private schools or other private teaching institutions.


Access to Further Studies

Upon a successful completion of the program, student may continue with master and doctoral studies, provided that they get a required score in Academic Staff and Graduate Study Education Exam (ALES) and a sufficient level of English language proficiency.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Each student must register in the beginning of each semester and in order to participate in the final examination, students must have attended at least 70% of the courses and 80 % of the practices. The students are subjected at least one mid-term examination and the final examination for each course. The mid-term examination’s (assessment methods like assignments, quizzes, etc. can be calculated as mid-term grade) contribution to the final grade is 40% and final examination counts for 60% of the final grade. The students have to get grades such as (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB) and (CC) in order to be successful. (DC) and (DD) grades are conditional success grades. It means that if a student has these grades for some courses, he has to get at least 2.0 GPA so that he will be successful in the mentioned courses.


Graduation Requirements

To succesfully complete all courses available in program (total of 240 ECTS), obtaining at least 2.0 weighed GPA of 4.00

Facilities

In the Department of Science Education, research and education activities are carried out with 1 professor, 3 associate professors, 2 assistant professor and 2 doctor research assistants (2022, July). Besides, lecturers from other faculties also teach in our department. Courses are performed in classrooms with projectors and having the capacity of 45 students.
