TOURISM RESEARCH INSTITUTE / RELIGIOUS TOURISM (MASTER)

History

Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University Tourism Research Institute was established with the decision of the Council of Ministers published in the Official Gazette dated 25 May 2018 and numbered 30431. Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University Tourism Research Institute ReligiousTourism Department has started its graduate education in the academic year of 2021-2022. The language of instruction is Turkish.


Qualification Awarded

The Master of Science Degree in ReligiousTourism is awarded to students who successfully completed all courses in the curriculum (a total of 120 ECTS credits) and have obtained a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 on a 4.00 scale. Students must also prepare a master’s thesis and pass the final oral examination.

Specific Admission Requirements

The applicants, who intend to apply to the Master of Science in ReligiousTourism program, must have 1. a bachelor's degree in tourism or a related field accepted by the Institute of Social Sciences 2. a minimum score of 55 from ALES (Academic Staff and Graduate Education Entrance Examination). The students are admitted into the program based on a specific proportion of their GPA, ALES, English language proficiency exams, and other requirements defined in the announcements into consideration. 60% of the ALES score, 30% of the GPA, and 10% of the language proficiency exam score of each candidate will be calculated and the results will be listed from top to lower scores. The number of candidates who will be interviewed is twice of the announced quota. After the interview, a second ranking is done by calculating 50% of the ALES score, 20% of the GPA, 10% of the language proficiency exam, and 20% of the interview score. The total score must be at least 50 to be included in the final ranking.


Specific Arrangement For Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is carried out according to the regulations set by the Nevsehir University Institute of Social Sciences. The students, who have successfully completed courses as registered graduate students at a different institution in their previous four semesters, can apply for recognition of prior learning. The recognition is determined by the Institute Board.


Qualification Requirements and Regulations

To be graduated from this program, students must successfully complete the core and elective courses (a total of 120 ECTS credits) in the curriculum. After completion of the courses, students must prepare a master’s thesis and pass the final oral examination. The final oral examination focuses on the defense of the thesis.


Profile of The Programme

The Master of Science in ReligiousTourism degree program is designed to meet the needs of managers in the tourism industry and instructors/researchers in tourism education programs. The objective of the program is to develop (a) solid academic background in the fields of hospitality and tourism and (b) strong research and problem-solving skills. Graduates from this program can integrate newly acquired skills and knowledge in the areas of the hotel, restaurant, tourism administration, hospitality education, and instruction to enhance their professional career.


Key Learning Outcomes of the Programme

PO-1 Understand, analyze and examine the contribution of tourism to peace and intercultural dialogue by taking the operational process of tourism industry and the roles of actors in the system into consideration; and generate solutions which can increase the contribution of tourism to reconciliation, sympathy and tolerance within societies.
PO-2 Comprehend the role and importance of religious and faith-based tourism in the tourism sector; understand, analyze and question dynamics of this tourism type from micro and macro perspectives in holistic view; and make decisions for solutions related to problems encountered.
PO-3 Apprehend the belief systems, historical development and process of human actions based on faith and religion within a global scale; appraise, analyze, examine these issues and generate solutions to problems with an unbiased, objective, scientific and ethical comprehension.
PO-4 Follow, interpret and discuss the developments in religious and faith-based tourism and develop scientific solutions with interdisciplinary and holistic approach.
PO-5 Understand personal, group and social relationships which underlie belief systems and tourism sector and fundamentals of religious tourist behavior; perceive and interpret cultural differences and conflicts and provide peaceful and ethical solutions to contradictions and problems within the frame of tolerance and sensibility.
PO-6 Understand and analyze the history and the importance of archaeological sites, buildings, sacred places, festivals, events and destinations representing various belief systems in Anatolia and throughout the world; and examine the cultural and social values of these places within the context of sustainability.
PO-7 Demonstrate and apply comprehensive knowledge of the history of religions in the development of religious and faith-based tourism and in improving contribution of stakeholders to social peace, intercultural communication, and tolerance in the tourism sector.
PO-8 Understand, analyze, and question distinctive dynamics and delicacy of religious and faith-based tourism and functioning of tourism businesses with a holistic view using both micro and macro approaches; and make decisions related to problems encountered.
PO-9 Demonstrate theoretical knowledge required to start, run and manage a business which will operate in religious and faith-based tourism sector; and apply this knowledge into projects with initiative.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Examinations are composed of one mid-term and one final exam. In order a student to take the final exam, he/she should attend at least 70% of theoretical courses and 80% of applied and laboratory studies. The course grade is calculated by adding 40% of mid-term grade to the 60% of the final exam. To be considered successful in a course, masters students must have at least CC grade.

Facilities

The Department of Religious at Nevsehir University Institute of tourism Research includes 7 full-time faculty members (1 professor, 3 associate professors and 3 assistant professors) who are expert in their fields. Courses are taught at Nevsehir University Faculty of Tourism and Faculty of Theology in classrooms equipped with computers and projections. Also, there are one library which specialized in tourism and two computer labs where students can access internet or study for their classes.
